Object Lessons on God's Love & Forgiveness

1. Bouncy Soft Egg
This object lesson demonstrates God's love can change the hearts of anyone, no matter how "tough" they seem.
Key Thought: God's love softens hard hearts.
Materials Needed:
- 2 eggs
- vinegar
- a glass
Directions:
- Place one egg in a glass of vinegar a day before your lesson
- Rinse off the egg and bring to class
- Rinse off the softened egg shell and let the kids bounce it on the table

A day or two before you are going to teach your Sunday School lesson, you’ll need to place one of the eggs into the glass, and fill it with vinegar.
Let the egg sit in the vinegar. After 24 hours, it should be soft and yellowish. Rinse it off and bring it to class with the other egg.
Show the students the hard egg and let them touch it. (You can boil it to avoid it breaking and making a mess in your class.)
Ask them if there is any way to make this hard egg shell soft. Then, rinse off the softened egg and let the kids touch it and even bounce it on the table.
Explain that this egg spent 24 hours in vinegar, which “magically” made it soft!
When God’s love surrounds us, like the vinegar covered the egg, we can’t help but come out completely changed. His love softens even the hardest of hearts!

2. Water and Pepper Trick
This object lesson shows the nature of God's forgiveness.
Key Thought: God casts our sin far away.
Materials Needed:
- Ground black pepper
- A plate
- Water
- Dish soap
Directions:
- Pour some water onto a plate
- Sprinkle pepper over the water
- Dip your finger into dish soap
- Dip your "soaped" finger into the pepper water
- Watch the pepper "magically" spread out, away from the soap

When God forgives us, he casts our sins far, far away. He forgives us completely, meaning He doesn’t hold any of our sins against us once we repent. He throws them out so far away so that they can’t affect us any longer.
God’s love and forgiveness is also complete– He doesn’t hold a grudge, or bring up our past sins later on, saying, “Remember when you did that bad thing?”
God's love is amazing!
PSALM 103:12
"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."
3. Water and Candle
God's forgiveness removes our sin because of Jesus' death on the cross.
Key Thought: Jesus paid for our sins by dying on the cross.
Materials Needed:
- A plate
- A glass
- Water
- Food Coloring
- Candle
Directions:
- Mix food coloring into water and pour it on a plate
- Place a lit candle in the middle of the plate
- Place the glass over the candle
- Watch the water rise into the glass, leaving the plate clean

Jesus came to this earth for one reason...to die for our sins. (1 Timothy 1:5)
By dying on the cross, and dying in our place Jesus paid for our sins. Like the water on the plate - Jesus took all our sins (the water) on Himself and paid for them when He died on the cross.
When we ask Jesus to save us (when we become a Christian) we are forgiven of our sins and have a forever home in Heaven!
1 PETER 2:24
"He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” (NIV)
9. Unseen Obedience
This object lesson demonstrates that God is working unseen for our good all the time!
Key Thought: God is working even when we cannot see it.
Materials Needed:
-
- Two coins
- Toothpick
- Clear plastic drinking cup
- Inflated balloon
- Hand towel (optional)
Directions:
- Stand the two coins up on their edges, keeping them together, and balance the toothpick across the tops of the two coins.
- Cover this with the clear plastic cup.
- As you talk about Daniel in Babylon and how it seemed like the only way to remain safe was to obey the King and the rulers that he could SEE and not pray to God.
- Then describe how Daniel decided to trust in God whom He could NOT see, even when the events of his life that he COULD see looked pretty bad.

Daniel was obeying God, someone he could not see because Daniel knew God is in complete control.

Daniel's life was filled with opportunities to either trust with his eyes or trust with faith in God. Each time Daniel chose to have faith and trust in the One he could not see.
DANIEL 6:10
"Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before."
